The Search Engines, such as AltaVista, HotBot etc (Not the Directory services like Yahoo!) pull up a web pages depending on the Search word/string match with those within Meta Tags as well as the Title of the Page. Essentially, there are two Meta Tags that are all important.

Meta Name=keywords Content="THIS IS WHERE ALL YOUR SITE RELATED WORDS GO IN"

Generally, the total characters in the Keywords is limited to about 800 ~ 1000. Repetition, of a particular word is allowed in uppercase & then in lower.

Meta Name=description Content="THIS IS WHERE A DESCRIPTION OF THE SITE SHOULD GO IN"

Ideally, the Tag Length should be limited to 150 ~ 250 characters. It is also a good practice to phrase the description in such a way that the sentence includes the important Keywords too.
